How do you use cookies and other tracking tools?
What are Cookies?
Cookies are small files that websites send to your device, mobile phone, tablet or computer that are then used to monitor you and remember certain information about you like what's in your shopping cart on an e-commerce store for example.
They are not harmful to your devices and are not malicious. They are in fact, just little codes that allow you to use many of the useful features of our websites (like remembering what you had left in your cart prior to check out in the website store, or what page you enjoyed reading the most.
Cookies have a determined cycle. Some only last for a short time and serve no purpose after it has completed its function, like closing down your browser for example. These are called 'session cookies'.
Some last longer though, for example, to enable a website to recognise you when you return to them. These are called 'persistent cookies'. Persistent cookies are stored on devices to help remember information, settings, preferences, or sign-on credentials that a user has previously saved. This helps create a convenient and faster website experience.
Cookies placed directly by a website owner (like us) are known as 'first party cookies' A first-party cookie is characterised by the fact that it can only be created and viewed by the website operator whose page you are visiting.
Also, many modern websites also use technology provided by other people/businesses, for example to provide online advertising. Cookies placed by other parties are known as 'third party cookies'.

Targeting or advertising cookies
What are they? These cookies are used to drive online advertising that is relevant to you by building up a picture of what you are interested in from your use of the internet. The cookies can limit the number of times you see an advert and help to measure the effectiveness of any advertising. They remember that you have visited a website and this information may be shared with other organisations or advertisers. Quite often targeting or advertising cookies will be linked to website functionality provided by the other organisation.
